My First Betta Breeding Attempt: A Failure That Taught Me More Than Success

Not every project succeeds the first time. As engineers, we're taught to analyze failures, identify bottlenecks, and improve the next iteration. Surprisingly, I found the same mindset applied outside software while attempting to breed betta fish for the first time. The breeding itself was successful. The eggs hatched, the fry became free-swimming, and for a brief moment it looked like everything had gone according to plan. A few days later, every fry was gone. Although disappointing, the experience taught me far more than a successful spawn probably would have. This is the story of my first attempt at breeding bettas—and the lessons it taught me about preparation, patience, and continuous learning.

This is the story of my first attempt at breeding bettas—and the lessons it taught me about preparation, patience, and continuous learning.


Why Bettas?

I've always been fascinated by betta fish.

Most people know them for their vibrant colors and flowing fins, but what interested me was something else entirely.

Their behavior.

Male bettas don't simply reproduce.

They build intricate bubble nests.

They carefully collect every egg that falls during spawning.

They gently place each egg back into the nest.

For several days, the male becomes a full-time caretaker, protecting and maintaining the nest until the fry hatch.

Watching this behavior in videos made me want to experience it myself.

Not because I wanted hundreds of fish.

Not because I wanted to sell them.

Simply because I wanted to understand the process firsthand.


Preparing the Breeding Tank

Like most first-time breeders, I spent weeks reading articles and watching videos before attempting anything.

I wanted to create an environment that felt as natural and stress-free as possible.

The breeding tank was intentionally simple.

It included:

  • Indian almond leaf to release tannins and mimic natural blackwater conditions
  • A coconut shell for shelter
  • Floating bubble wrap to support the bubble nest
  • Guppy grass for cover and biological stability
  • Shallow, tannin-rich water

Before introducing the pair, I conditioned both the male and female separately with nutritious foods to ensure they were healthy and ready to breed.

Eventually, everything seemed ready.


Watching Nature Do Its Thing

The male quickly got to work.

Within a day, he had built a beautiful bubble nest beneath the floating bubble wrap.

It was surprisingly impressive.

Soon after, I introduced the female.

The next few hours were fascinating.

There was chasing.

There were displays of aggression.

Then finally, the pair embraced beneath the bubble nest.

Eggs slowly drifted toward the bottom of the tank.

The female looked exhausted.

The male immediately began collecting every falling egg with incredible precision before placing them carefully back into the bubble nest.

It was easily one of the most fascinating behaviors I've ever observed in an aquarium.

For a moment, everything seemed to be going perfectly.


When Everything Changed

Unfortunately, nature doesn't always follow the script we expect.

After spawning, the female unexpectedly attacked the male.

Despite my efforts, the male didn't survive.

At that point, I assumed the breeding attempt had failed completely.

Without the male guarding the nest, I wasn't optimistic about the eggs surviving.

Then something unexpected happened.

The eggs began to hatch.

Tiny translucent fry appeared beneath the bubble nest.

They weren't swimming yet.

Instead, they hung vertically beneath the bubbles while absorbing the nutrients from their yolk sacs.

Seeing those tiny fry for the first time was incredibly exciting.

After everything that had happened, I genuinely believed I might still succeed.


The Challenge I Didn't Prepare For

A few days later, the fry became free-swimming.

This is the stage every breeder talks about.

It's also the stage where I realized I had overlooked one of the most important parts of the entire process.

Food.

Not adult food.

Not flakes.

Not pellets.

The microscopic live foods that newly hatched betta fry depend on.

I had some naturally occurring microorganisms in the tank.

I also had a small infusoria culture.

The problem was that it wasn't nearly dense enough.

With dozens of tiny fry needing constant access to microscopic food, my preparation simply wasn't sufficient.

Over the following days, I noticed fewer and fewer fry.

Eventually...

None remained.


Looking Back

For a while, I considered the breeding attempt a failure.

Then I started thinking about it differently.

The spawning wasn't a failure.

The breeding pair did exactly what nature intended.

The eggs were fertilized.

The nest worked.

The eggs hatched.

The fry became free-swimming.

The real bottleneck wasn't breeding.

It was me.

Or more specifically...

My preparation.


What This Experience Taught Me

Looking back, I learned lessons that no YouTube video or article could have fully taught me.

1. Preparation Starts Long Before Breeding

I spent weeks preparing the fish.

I should have spent just as much time preparing live food cultures.

Healthy fry depend on food from the very first day they begin swimming.


2. Live Food Is Infrastructure

As a software engineer, this comparison immediately made sense to me.

You wouldn't launch an application before the infrastructure is ready.

Similarly, breeding fish before establishing dependable food cultures creates an unnecessary bottleneck.

The fish may do everything correctly.

The environment may be perfect.

Without food, the project still fails.


3. Nature Doesn't Care About Expectations

One thing fishkeeping constantly reminds me is that nature isn't deterministic.

You can follow every guide perfectly and still encounter unexpected outcomes.

Sometimes the female becomes aggressive.

Sometimes the male eats the eggs.

Sometimes the fry simply don't survive.

That's part of the learning process.


4. Failure Is Still Progress

This experience didn't leave me discouraged.

It left me curious.

Why did the fry disappear?

How can I improve?

What should I prepare differently?

Those questions matter far more than simply getting lucky on the first attempt.


Preparing for the Next Attempt

This time, I'm approaching things differently.

Before attempting another spawn, I'm focusing entirely on food cultures.

I've already ordered:

  • Microworm cultures
  • Moina cultures

My goal is to establish reliable, continuous live food production before introducing another breeding pair.

Only after those systems are stable will I attempt breeding again.

Ironically, the next breeding attempt won't begin with fish.

It will begin with microorganisms.


The Bigger Lesson

As strange as it sounds, this experience reminded me a lot of engineering.

In software, success isn't usually determined by a single feature.

It's determined by everything surrounding it.

Infrastructure.

Monitoring.

Dependencies.

Preparation.

Fish breeding turned out to be surprisingly similar.

The fish knew exactly what to do.

The weak link wasn't biology.

It was the system supporting it.


Final Thoughts

Not every first attempt needs to succeed.

Sometimes failure teaches lessons that success never could.

I didn't end up with dozens of juvenile bettas.

I ended up with something arguably more valuable.

Experience.

The next breeding attempt will almost certainly be different.

Not because the fish changed.

Because I did.

And that's the most rewarding part of any hobby.

Every failure is simply another opportunity to build a better system for the next attempt.
